When an automatic gearbox detects a fault it can switch to "emergency" or "limp" mode to protect itself and the car. A warning appears on the dashboard; the car usually uses only certain gears and power and speed are limited.
Why does it kick in?
The mode is triggered when the control unit receives inconsistent data from a sensor, when oil pressure or temperature goes out of range, or when a solenoid or mechatronic fault is detected. The purpose is to prevent greater damage.
What should you do?
- Stop in a safe place and do not drive hard.
- Switching the engine off and on can clear the warning temporarily; that does not mean the fault is fixed, as the record stays in the car's computer.
- If possible, bring the car to us slowly over a short distance. If the car cannot move, bringing it by tow truck is safer.
- Do not ignore the warning light; a small fault grows over time.
What is done in the workshop?
The fault codes are read and the transmission oil and operating values examined; whether the fault is in a sensor, the mechatronic unit, the clutch or a wiring connection is established by measurement. We explain the result and the recommended repair and carry it out with your approval.
