Many drivers with a gearbox problem come with the same question: "Can my gearbox be repaired, or does it need a complete overhaul?" The answer depends on where the fault is.
Repair: faults solved without opening the casing
Replacing or repairing a sensor, a wiring connection, a solenoid or the mechatronic unit is often done without opening the gearbox casing. Replacing a leaking seal can also fall into this group. In such jobs the gearbox can remain in the car or be only partly removed.
Overhaul and rebuild: internal damage
For a worn clutch pack, bearings, gear set or damage inside the casing, the gearbox must be removed from the car and opened. In such a job the internal parts are checked one by one; worn parts are renewed, the gearbox is cleaned and reassembled.
Symptoms pointing to internal damage
- Metal particles in the oil, or dark oil with a burnt smell
- A gearbox that will not engage or keeps dropping into limp mode
- Persistent slipping and rising revs caused by clutch slip
- Whining and noise from inside the gearbox
How is the decision made?
The decision is made from the read-out, oil check and measurements carried out before dismantling. Sometimes the measurements show that a simple fix will be enough; sometimes that a superficial fix will not work. We explain either case clearly in advance and proceed with your approval. This approach avoids both unnecessary cost and a second job when the first did not work.
Automatic Transmission Overhaul
When there is wear inside the gearbox, a superficial fix is not enough. We strip the removed transmission, inspect every component, renew what is worn and reassemble it to specification.
