When buying a used car, the gearbox is, along with the engine, one of the most expensive items to repair. On cars with dual-clutch DSG, S tronic or PDK gearboxes in particular, a few checks before buying can reduce costs later.
What to look for on the test drive
- Cold start: test the car with the engine cold; some faults only show when cold.
- Pulling away: there should be no shudder, hesitation or thump when pulling away gently.
- Low speed and traffic-like driving: watch the gear changes at slow speeds.
- Reverse and park: there should be no delay or harsh movement when engaging.
- Hills: on a slope the car should move off without rolling back or shuddering.
Paperwork and records
Has the gearbox oil been changed? When and at what mileage? Service invoices and records are the most reliable information about a car. A missing record does not by itself mean a fault, but it calls for caution.
Computer check
Reading the stored faults in the car's computer, checking for gearbox oil leaks and examining operating values gives important information before purchase. For a pre-purchase check we recommend booking by phone first.
